Ukraine’s Independence Day — The Unfinished Battle for Freedom
Today is Ukraine’s Independence Day, and we congratulate all our colleagues on this holiday, but we also offer some controversial thoughts on the matter. On one hand, Ukraine adopted the Declaration of Independence on August 24, 1991. On the other hand, this document states independence as something newly acquired. Something Ukraine never had before. Later, the enemy used this formula to justify their theory of the artificiality of our state. Right now, when the already well-beaten and scorched gas station is spewing bile and venom, this theme forms the basis of their propaganda.
Yet the Baltic countries, for example, celebrate roughly the same event differently. They call it the Day of Restoration of Independence. This immediately builds a bridge to the past and brings to light the question of who took away the independence they had to restore. Admittedly, such a framing changes literally everything and, first and foremost, truly gives grounds to celebrate this event on this day. That is, independence existed much earlier but was lost, and on this day it was restored. Something similar happened with us.
The Historical Reality of Ukrainian Statehood
We know perfectly well that Ukraine had both statehood and independence in earlier times — long before a country called “russia” even appeared. Ukraine gained its last independence immediately after the Russian Empire collapsed. However, each time Muscovy interrupted this independence with fire and blood. Muscovy brought death to our land repeatedly. These are historical realities. We simply must take them into account at such important moments.
Now it’s easy to discuss this topic, but in 1991 circumstances developed rapidly. Everything was not so obvious, and it was necessary to “stake” the opportunity to exit the Soviet Union, which was done. Yet exactly one year later, on August 22, 1992, at a solemn session of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Mykola Plavyuk, president of the Ukrainian People’s Republic in exile, spoke. Then he declared Ukraine the successor of the UNR and resigned his powers before the Verkhovna Rada.
A complete formalization of the transfer of power took place. Specifically, Plavyuk handed over the charter and statement of transfer of powers. He handed over the symbols of power: the regalia of Hetman Mazepa and other symbols of Hetman authority. Moreover, this was not just a decorative show – everything happened within the framework of the current legislation of the UNR. On November 12, 1920, the UNR adopted crucial laws in connection with the Bolshevik occupation of Ukraine. These were “On Temporary Supreme Administration and the Procedure of Legislation in the UNR” and “Law on the State People’s Council”. In this way, the UNR laid the foundations for the activities of its government in exile.
Historical Continuity
Many know about the Polish government in exile. It also performed its functions for several decades and the main function was to ensure continuity of statehood. This is an extremely important aspect, since the statement and legal confirmation of continuity explains the period of exile as a forced measure due to enemy occupation. Therefore, any discrepancies and political speculation on this matter are excluded. As we can see, the Polish government in exile existed from 1939, and the same government of Ukraine, which preserved its structure, attributes of power, and so on — from 1920.
Mykola Plavyuk gave a formal reason to connect the historical threads. The Verkhovna Rada was obliged to make appropriate changes to current legislation. Then we would now celebrate the Day of Restoration of Independence. But this was not done then and has not been done now. This introduces an element of uncertainty into the very essence of this holiday.
They Came to Erase Us
On the other hand, we now understand something crucial. Ukraine’s Independence Day might not exist at all if we had not fought back starting on February 24, 2022. We stopped the horde that wanted to erase the very name “Ukraine”. As mentioned above, this is not happening for the first time. It always comes from the same place. Muscovy has always brought death to our land. Muscovy tried to kill Ukraine completely so that it would dissolve just as it did in the Russian Federation. There, all enslaved peoples are either destroyed or assimilated.
The Orcs* erase the memory of ancestors and roots among enslaved peoples, leaving most of them unable to remember their language or culture. They are trying to create something like this — rootless, languageless, and memoryless — in Belarus. They wanted to do the same with us. But this trick didn’t work here. It never will. The more openly the enemy advances on our land, the faster Ukraine shakes off colonial dust. We tear off colonial filth with blood. Now, after half a year of war, the enemy has seen what awaits themhere. Death.
Ukraine’s Independence Day and the Path to True Freedom
The defeat of their army in Ukraine will be a powerfulblow to the foundation of the leper colony itself, which will hardly survive. If so, then this endless cycle of aggressive wars against Ukraine will be broken. We will do everything not just to break it, but to throw it into the dustbin of history, along with the artificial name of the leper colony “russia”. Someone had to do this, and fate decreed that the sword that would finally pierce this formally two-headed but essentially headless creature would be placed in Ukraine’s hands. The whole world is now watching how skillfully Ukraine wields this sword.

Well, after the last enemy leaves our land or gets covered with an appropriate layer of our earth, we will need to return to the question of Ukraine’s Independence Day. In essence, it is on that day that we will truly acquire it. In this case, Independence is synonymous with freedom. You cannot find it or receive it as a gift. You can only win it. Those who got it without a fight and blood will never know its price and will easily exchange it for food and entertainment. Therefore, it will be necessary to establish a new, true Independence Day, and rename today’s one as the Day of Restoration of Independence. I hope that after everything stated above, the necessity of this step raises no doubts.
But for now — Happy Independence Day! Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the Armed Forces of Ukraine! We will win!
*Orcs – a common term for Russians who support or participate in the armed aggression against Ukraine. Dehumanizing? Yes. Accurate? Also yes.
