Russian Airstrike on Mariupol Drama Theater: 1,200 Civilians Inside

Just a couple of days ago, a video out of Mariupol tore through the internet — Russian occupiers fired a tank cannon at a man simply walking down a sidewalk. Normal people struggle to process something like that, but in Russia nobody sees a problem with it. And that, really, tells you everything you need to know about both Putin and Russia itself.

We — and not only we — have been writing about this for years, and only now is it starting to reach broader public awareness.

Watch it here:

Russians had already hit a maternity hospital in Mariupol just over a week before. But today brought news of something even larger and more savage than a man on a sidewalk.

A Bomb on a Theatre Full of Women and Children

Russian aviation dropped a heavy bomb on the drama theatre in Mariupol and destroyed it completely. The city is under constant shelling and fighting continues on its outskirts, so no rescue operation can begin right now — which means the number of dead and wounded remains unknown.

What is known for certain: a large number of women and children were inside. Some sheltered in the basement that served as a bomb shelter, others simply stayed in the theatre itself. Video published on March 10, 2022 showed hundreds of displaced Mariupol residents living there — food was being organized for them. Satellite imagery from March 14 showed the word “ДЕТИ” — (CHILDREN) in Russian — written in enormous letters in two locations near the building, deliberately marking it as a civilian shelter with children inside, not a military position.

According to the BBC, up to 1,200 women and children may have been present at the time of the airstrike on Mariupol Drama Theater. Human Rights Watch estimates between 500 and 800 civilians. All of them were inside when the bomb hit and the structure collapsed on top of them.

This was not a mistake. This was a strike directed exclusively at civilians. All of them were caught in the explosion and the collapse of the theatre’s structure.

What This Actually Means

Two conclusions follow from this — and they are inseparable. First: Russia is unquestionably a criminal and terrorist state. Second: the pilot who dropped that bomb on the Mariupol theatre is no different from the artillery crew carpeting residential blocks with Grad rockets, or the tank crew that shot that man walking down the sidewalk, or the infantry soldier with a rifle in his hands. The pilot kills women and children from an aircraft at altitude, the infantryman kills them face to face. The method differs, but the act does not.

The exact number of civilians Russia killed in the Mariupol Drama Theater airstrike remains unknown. As of March 18, approximately 130 survivors have been confirmed.
